Background

Battle Box Singapore is an underground military complex within Fort Canning that played a crucial role during the Battle of Singapore in World War II. It served as the underground command centre for the British Malaya Command, led by Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival. During the war, Singapore was a British stronghold, but it fell to the invading Japanese forces in February 1942, leading to the largest surrender of British-led forces in history.

The Battle Box was where the British military leaders made their decisions during the intense battle for Singapore. Despite its strategic value, the decision-making process and lack of proper defences eventually led to the surrender of the British forces. Today, the Battle Box is a museum and a historical site open to visitors, offering insight into the wartime history of Singapore and the events that unfolded during World War II.
